Material Waste Factors: A Cheat Sheet for Every Trade

The percentage you add to a measured quantity before you order. These are the figures the trades actually use, and they are the same ones built into the 20 calculators on this site. Free to copy, print, or link.

The two rules behind every number above

1. Waste is not padding. It is the material that physically cannot end up in the finished job: the cut piece at every wall, the tile that cracks in the saw, the board with a knot where the joint lands, the concrete that fills a low spot you could not see. Order the measured quantity exactly and you will come up short, every time.

2. The cost of being wrong is lopsided. Over-ordering costs you the price of the extra material, and often not even that, since most suppliers take back unopened boxes and bulk material has a second use. Under-ordering costs you a second trip, a second delivery fee, a stalled crew, a visible seam where the work stopped, and sometimes a dye lot or production run that no longer exists. The asymmetry is why every trade rounds up.

Where waste factors do not apply

Some materials are bought by coverage rather than area, and there the variable is absorption, not waste. Paint, stain, and sealer all fall in this group. A gallon of stain covers 250 sq ft of smooth sealed wood and 125 sq ft of dry weathered decking, so the honest answer is to judge the surface, not to add a percentage. The same is true of primer on new drywall and the first epoxy coat on bare concrete.

Bulk landscape material is the other exception. With mulch and gravel you are buying to a depth, so what matters is measuring the area properly and deciding the depth deliberately. Topsoil is the odd one out: its 15% is settlement rather than waste, which is why it is the figure most people miss and then wonder why their finished grade came in low.

A note on rounding

Every figure here gets applied before you round up to whatever unit the material is sold in: the bag, the box, the bundle, the pallet, the stick, the square. A 2% shortfall against a 50 lb bag of thinset is still a whole bag you have to go buy. Apply the percentage, then round up to the purchase unit, and never the other way around.
